Which MERV Rating is Best for Your Home: 8 or 11?

When it comes to air filtration, the MERV rating is an important factor to consider. MERV 8 filters are known to be effective at filtering contaminants such as pollen, dust mites, sawdust, mold spores, and lint from the air. But if you're looking for even better air quality, a MERV 11 filter might be a better choice. MERV 11 filters are more efficient than MERV 8 filters because they can capture smaller particles.

They offer additional protection against pet dander, dust mites, automatic emissions and dust that damages the lungs. This is a good choice for homes with pets or those looking for even better air quality than what the MERV 8 can offer. It is also our most popular type of air filter. A MERV 9 will trap less than 50% of particles with a size of 1.0-3.0 microns, the MERV 10 will stop up to 64%, the MERV 11 will reach up to 79%, and the MERV 12 is capable of capturing up to 89%. The same goes for households with smokers or pets, as Merv 11 air filters are better at eliminating odors. Most modern HVAC systems have no problem working with higher MERV filters, so millions of homeowners rely on them.

MERV 8 air filters are almost as affordable as less efficient products, making them good value for money. The MERV scale is not linear; the difference between a MERV 6 and a MERV 8 is almost double in the percentage of particles captured. Filters with higher merv ratings should be changed more frequently (at least every three months) to avoid restricted airflow that can cause the system to operate inefficiently or even damage it. The best MERV rating for your home will depend on what you want to filter and how much airflow your HVAC system needs to operate. If you want you to at least clean your air and handle dust, mold, pollen and bacteria, then a MERV 8 will do the job.

Owning pets would require a MERV 10 to control their dander, which tends to have smaller particles than the contaminants discussed above. However, this depends on the MERV rating you choose for your home, along with a couple of other factors. Choosing the right MERV rating is an important decision in terms of overall cost, air quality, and product durability. If you are concerned about outdoor air pollution, family members with respiratory problems, pets are in the house, then choosing a higher merv rating might be a good idea.
